I came to a realization today. I think I’m obsessed with checking the balance on my bank accounts. And I think I know when it started…that day that someone tried to use my credit card number at the store! I remember it like it was yesterday…
Account security guy: miss, there has been some suspicious activity on your account.
Me: Oh really? (heart starts pounding) like what?
Account security guy: Well, there’s a $2200 charge here posted within the last few hours. To Bloomingdale’s
Me: Where?
Account security guy: Bloomingdale’s. Did you make this purchase?
Me: Uh, no. I absolutely did not. What do we do?
Account security guy: Well, we’ll go ahead and close the account immediately and send it to the investigators. Let me verify your address so we can send you the new account info.
Wow. I felt violated. Then I kicked into problem solving mode and tried to think of every recent transaction where I may have had my card. Hmm…maybe it was that online purchase—or no—maybe that one time I gave my card number over the phone! That was probably it! It was that lady! I’m never doing THAT again! All the more reason to use CASH for everything. Thinking I had figured it out eased the pain a bit, but I still felt like my identity was on the brink of being stolen. I didn’t sleep well that night, but enough to make the shock go away for a few hours.
Thankfully the credit card people said the charge did not go through and there was no sign other attempted charges, nor of identity theft.
In the meantime, I’ve developed this urge to check my savings, checking and credit card balances at least twice a day. Can anyone blame me?
